Black Forest Trifle Recipe

If there’s one dessert I can’t stop raving about, it’s the Black Forest Trifle. I whipped up this decadent beauty last weekend for a family dinner, and everyone went back for seconds (some even thirds!).
Prep Time 20 minutes mins
Cook Time 10 minutes mins
- Chocolate cake or brownies
- Cherry compote
- Whipped cream
- Dark chocolate shavings
- Fresh cherries for garnish
If baking a cake from scratch, allow it to cool completely before use. Cut the cake into small cubes or crumble it for easier layering. Store-bought brownies or chocolate cake can also work beautifully here.
If you’re using fresh cherries, cook them down with a bit of sugar and water to create a lush compote. No time? Pre-made cherry compote is a great time-saver! You can even add a splash of cherry liqueur for extra depth.
Whip up heavy cream with a touch of sugar until soft peaks form. Keep it light and airy to balance the richness of the other ingredients. 🥄
Now comes the fun part! Begin with a layer of chocolate cake at the base of your dish. Add a layer of cherry compote, followed by whipped cream. Repeat until all ingredients are used, finishing with whipped cream on top. 🍒
For the pièce de résistance, top your trifle with dark chocolate shavings and a few whole cherries. Place the dish in the fridge to chill for at least an hour before serving. This allows the flavors to meld together perfectly. 🎂
- Cool the Cake: Warm cake can melt the whipped cream, so always ensure it’s cooled completely.
- Don’t Overfill Layers: Adding too much compote can make the layers soggy, so use it sparingly.
- Whip Cream Gently: Overbeating can result in grainy cream. Stop whisking once soft peaks form.
- Chill Before Serving: This allows the dessert to set and makes it even more delicious.
