Chicken Philly Cheesesteak Recipe

When I first made this Chicken Philly Cheesesteak, I thought nothing could beat the classic Philly cheesesteak. But to my surprise, this version quickly stole the spotlight.

Ingredients
  

  • Hoagie rolls 4
  • Olive oil 1 tablespoon
  • Chicken breasts or thighs thinly sliced (1 pound)
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
  • Garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon
  • Butter 1 tablespoon
  • Mushrooms thinly sliced (8 ounces)
  • Green bell pepper thinly sliced (1/2)
  • White or yellow onion thinly sliced (1/2)
  • Garlic minced (1 clove)
  • Provolone cheese sliced (5–6 slices)

Instructions
 

  • Start by patting the chicken dry and cutting it into thin strips for faster cooking. Toss the chicken with salt, pepper, and garlic powder, ensuring every piece is evenly coated. This step lays the foundation for mouthwatering flavor.
  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the seasoned chicken strips and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and fully cooked through (about 7–8 minutes). Once done, remove the chicken from the skillet and set it aside. Keep it warm for later.
  • With the skillet still warm, melt the butter and toss in the sliced onions, mushrooms, and bell peppers. Cook for 5–6 minutes, stirring often, until they start to soften and the onions turn translucent. Add salt, pepper, and minced garlic, cooking for another 2 minutes until fragrant.
  • Return the cooked chicken to the skillet, mixing it well with the softened vegetables. The flavors come together beautifully at this stage, and your kitchen will smell divine!
  • Lay slices of provolone cheese over the chicken and veggie mixture in the skillet. Cover with a lid and allow the cheese to melt completely, which usually takes about 1–2 minutes. The gooey, melted cheese is the perfect topping.
  • Slice your hoagie rolls and scoop generous portions of the cheesy chicken mixture into each. Serve immediately and watch everyone’s face light up with joy.

Notes

  • Cutting Chicken: Chill the chicken in the freezer for 15–20 minutes before slicing. This makes it much easier to cut into thin strips.
  • Get a Good Sear: Don’t overcrowd the skillet when cooking the chicken. This ensures each piece gets a nice golden brown exterior.
  • Use Fresh Ingredients: Fresh bread, vegetables, and cheese elevate the flavors of your sandwich.
  • Cheese Options: If you want an extra-melty effect, use two layers of cheese slices.
  • Bread Toasting: Lightly toast your hoagie rolls for added crunch and structure, especially if serving later.
