Ingredients

  • 6 slices hearty bread preferably day-old
  • 8 slices ham thinly sliced
  • 8 slices turkey or chicken
  • 6 slices Swiss cheese
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 ½ cups milk
  • 2 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp pepper

Instructions

  • Start by greasing your baking dish. Lay half of the bread slices in a single layer across the base. This forms the bottom of the casserole and ensures the egg mixture soaks evenly.
  • On top of the bread, arrange half of the ham, turkey, and cheese in even layers, covering each slice. Repeat with a second layer of bread and the remaining meat and cheese for a stacked, flavorful filling.
  • Grab your mixing bowl and whisk together the eggs, milk, Dijon mustard, maple syrup, salt, and pepper. The mustard and syrup bring that signature sweet-and-savory Monte Cristo flavor. Make sure the mixture is smooth and well combined.
  • Carefully pour the egg mixture over the bread and fillings, ensuring every layer is soaked. Cover the dish with foil and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld, or prepare it the night before for maximum convenience. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 35-40 minutes. If the top browns too quickly, cover with foil during the last 10-15 minutes.
  • Once baked to golden perfection, remove the casserole from the oven and allow it to cool slightly. Slice it into portions, serve warm, and watch as everyone digs in!

Notes

  • Make Ahead: Prepare the night before and bake in the morning.
  • Stale Bread Tip: Day-old bread absorbs custard better and prevents sogginess.
  • Flavor Twist: Add cinnamon to the custard or top with powdered sugar for a classic Monte Cristo finish
