Old-Fashioned Custard Pie

Servings & Timing:
Servings: 8 slices
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 45–50 minutes
Total Time: 55–60 minutes
Ingredients List:
For the Crust:
1 pre-made pie crust (store-bought or homemade)
Optional: 1 egg beaten with 1 tbsp water (for egg wash)
For the Custard Filling:
3 large eggs
1 cup granulated sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 tsp salt
2 cups whole milk (or substitute half-and-half for a richer taste)
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg (optional, for added depth)
Instructions:
1️⃣ Preheat the Oven:
Set your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Place your pie crust into a 9-inch pie plate, gently pressing it into place. Trim any overhanging dough.
If you’d like a golden finish, brush the crust with the optional egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon of water).
2️⃣ Mix the Custard:
In a large bowl, beat the eggs with the granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth.
Slowly whisk in the milk until fully combined.
In a separate small bowl, combine the flour and nutmeg (if using), then gradually stir this into the custard mixture to avoid clumps.
3️⃣ Fill the Pie Shell:
Carefully pour the custard mixture into the prepared pie crust, spreading it evenly.
4️⃣ Bake the Pie:
Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 45–50 minutes, or until the edges are golden and the center has set.
To test, insert a knife near the center — if it comes out clean, your pie is done.
